Mr. Wizard R.I.P.

Don Herbert, who explained the wonderful world of science to millions children on his Nickelodeon cable TV show "Mr. Wizard's World", has died after a long battle with multiple myeloma. He was 89.

Herbert used basic experiments to teach scientific principles to his TV audience via an in-studio guest boy or girl who assisted in the experiments. Herbert liked to perform his scientific experiments as "tricks" to get the kids hooked, then explain the science behind it later.

Herbert wrote several books, including "Mr. Wizard's Supermarket Science" and "Mr. Wizard's Experiments for Young Scientists."

In recent years, he helped set up his website mrwizardstudios.com.

Vince McMahon Talks About Chris Benoit's Murder-Suicide

I've just been quite perplexed to be honest with you about what happened with WWE Wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed his wife and seven year old son and then himself this past weekend.

I'm more of an old school wrestling fan, but do watch it from time to time and enjoy the comedic storylines the WWE frequently does. This is a harsh blow to pro wrestling and it will have massive impact with its core audience (which is family friendly).

Tomorrow, June 28th, Vince McMahon, the genius behind the WWE will be interviewed in an exclusive with the Today Show (between 7-10am) by Meredith Viera. I'm interested in his answers regarding Beniot, the "tribute" (publicity stunt) WWE did for him last Monday night on RAW and how steroids have contributed to the deaths of other WWE stars like Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect and Flyin' Brian. Meredith Viera better not wimp out and do a fluff interview!

American Hair Metal Book

There was a time—not so long ago—when pomp and spandex dominated MTV and pop radio playlists. The book American Hair Metal celebrates this orgy of flamboyance, androgyny and animal magnetism, of big-haired alpha males and the beautiful women who surrounded them.
American Hair Metal is 180 pages full of rare photographs of the biggest bands and quotes about the sex, drugs and Rock & Roll style of ‘80s American hair metal.

With all the quotes and photos, this book will find a comfortable home on your coffee table. But don't expect much more than that. American Hair Metal is a 180 page book with 160 pages of photos. It's a ton of fun to flip through, but there's not much to read.

Google Solar Panel Project

In the last 24 hours, Google produced 6,783 kilowatt-hours of electricity from the sun. In October 2006, Google announced a commitment to solar energy production and launched the largest solar panel installation to date on a corporate campus in the United States. Google has installed over 90% of the 9,212 solar panels that comprise the 1,600 kilowatt project.

Panels cover the rooftops of eight buildings and two newly constructed solar carports at the Googleplex (check out this fly-over video). This installation is projected to produce enough electricity for approximately 1,000 California homes or 30% of Google's peak electricity demand in our solar powered buildings at our Mountain View, CA headquarters.

YouTube Live Today on Apple TV

Good news for Apple TV and the iPhone. Starting today, Apple TV owners can start watching YouTube content on their TV sets. YouTube content will also be available to the iPhone when it officially launches on June 29th.

Apple TV users can download a free update via the built-in software update option to enable a new YouTube content menu. An option to "check for updates" is listed under the Apple TV settings screen.

iPhone users will be able to enjoy YouTube's originally-created content on their iPhones when they begin shipping on June 29. A YouTube player application on the iPhone will wirelessly stream YouTube's videos to the iPhone over Wi-Fi or EDGE networks and play it on iPhone's 3.5 inch display.

Both AppleTV and the iPhone will play YouTube content that has been reencoded into Apple's h.264 video format. 10,000 of YouTube's videos have been converted so far with the remainder expected by the fall. An Apple press release claims that h.264 was chosen "to achieve higher video quality and longer battery life on mobile devices."

Reports coming out of WWDC 2007 say that one of Apple's justifications of avoiding Flash video playback on the iPhone is improved battery life. The iPhone contains dedicated hardware capable of playing h.264 content, while Flash content would require more intensive use of the iPhone's CPU, resulting in higher battery drain.

You can read a review of the Apple TV here.
